Dark Places
In the darkest pits of humanity, you better not shed your light.
Cover Art
Concept Overview
Survive through a torn apart city in a post-apocalyptic world searching for your lost daughter.
Dark Places is a horror game concept that prioritizes atmospheric tension over jump scares. The design centers on environmental storytelling — the spaces players explore tell stories of what happened before they arrived, building dread through implication rather than exposition.
The GDD covers lighting design systems, procedural tension curves, sound design frameworks, and the "safe space" mechanic that gives players moments of relief between escalating encounters.
Core Design Pillars
- Atmospheric Dread: Tension built through environment, lighting, and sound — not cheap scares
- Environmental Archaeology: Players piece together the story by examining the world around them
- Dynamic Tension Curve: Procedural systems that read player behavior and adjust scare pacing
- Safe Space Design: Carefully placed sanctuaries that make the dangerous areas feel even more threatening by contrast
